Brussels, 29/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - On the sidelines of the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Union in Vienna on 28 May (see other article), High Representative Javier Solana said that he is optimistic that the permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Russia) and Germany would be able to reach an agreement on the package of incentives/sanctions drawn up on behalf of the European Union by the EU-3 (Germany, France and the United Kingdom), to convince Iran to give up its uranium enrichment activities. "We are continuing to do our work. We discussed it with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi (where the 17th EU-Russian Summit was held on 25 May; see other article) and I believe that we are making progress", Mr Solana told Reuters on Sunday, before going on to add: "the Security Council is also continuing to do its work. I believe that we are very close". The legally binding draft resolution against Teheran is still being drafted at the Security Council. It will not see the light of day until the package of European proposals has been approved by the permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany, who are due to meet this week at Foreign Affairs Minister level in order to "finalise the package of European proposals", as Mr Solana's spokesperson, Christina Gallach, announced on Monday.
