Possible common European phone number

Brussels, 29/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is examining the possibility of creating a single dedicated European number, 116, for missing and sexually exploited children, it announced on 24 May, on the eve of the International Missing Children's Day. A single European telephone number, similar to Belgium's 110, could be in place by the end of the year. “A third of children who go missing are in another European country the next day. That is why a European number is needed,” said Daniel Cardon de Lichtbuer, President of Child Focus, at a ceremony in the Berlaymont, the building which houses the European Commission. Commissioner Franco Frattini also announced a communication for July, setting out a “European Strategy on the Rights of the Child”. “It will be a wide action approach to meet the challenge of protecting children,” said Mr Frattini during the ceremony. The “European Strategy on the Rights of the Child” will tackle the sexual exploitation of children in Europe, through the harmonisation of national arrangements, and the creation of an Internet site to inform children of their rights. The Commissioner also called for Europol to be granted greater means. “We are currently strengthening police cooperation and giving Europol the tools necessary to dismantle criminal networks, particularly in the areas of paedo-pornography,” he said. Belgian singer Adamo took part in the ceremony, singing “Enfants” (“Children”), a song he wrote for all abused and exploited children in the world.
