29/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release on the eve of Milk Day on 1st June, CSU MEP Albert Dess highlights the nutritional value of milk and its importance to European agriculture, pointing out that, for many EU regions, it is the main agricultural product. Mr Dess is concerned about the impact of WTO multilateral negotiations on the milk sector. He asks what the consequences of a policy of further liberalisation will be. He says that “full liberalisation of the milk market would have a devastating effect on many European farmers”. The example of countries like Croatia, Norway, Iceland and Canada “should make the European Commission think,” says Mr Dess, noting that in these countries, “dairy farmers have not be sacrificed on the alter of world trade, and consumers are prepared to pay a fair price for a quality product”.
