Brussels, 09/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Academic Network for Legal Studies on Immigration and Asylum in Europe, coordinated by the Institute for European Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and founded with the financial support of the European Commission's Odysseus programme, is holding its 6th European Summer School European Union Law and Policy on Immigration and Asylum in Brussels from 3 to 14 July3 to 14 July. The Network is made up of academics from institutions in France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania and Latvia.
The Network has announced that after 5 years of successful experience with summer schools, it has decided to create a one-year certificate in European Law on Immigration and Asylum. For academic year 2006-2007, it plans a series of classes in four modules of two or three weeks, aimed at 30-40 specialists in the area of immigration and asylum: - September-December 2006, introductory module principally on international immigration and refugee law, Human Rights and immigration and asylum, free movement of European citizens, developments in EU immigration and asylum policy; January-March 2007, a specialised module on immigration: external border control and visa policy, admission of third-country nationals, their status and integration, and their return; March-April 2007, specialised module on asylum: definition of persons who can be protected, status of protected persons, procedures for access to the status; May-July 2007, research module: research and drafting of final essay (which may be written in other official EU languages, although classes and the oral examination will be in English).
