Improving women's health

Vienna, 26/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday in Vienna, the Health Ministers of the twenty five Member States of the European Union held a discussion on women's health, which brought unanimous agreement on a set of draft conclusions which the Council of Ministers will formally adopt at the meeting in Luxemburg on 1st and 2 June. The text calls on the Commission to present next year a new report on women's health in the EU. The previous report, dating from 1997, applied only to fifteen Member States. Commissioner Markos Kyprianou told press that this report would probably be available at the end of next year. Ministers also called for special follow-up for women in six areas: cardiovascular disease; diabetes; endometriosis; osteoporosis; mental health; tobacco addiction and cancer. It recommends drawing up a list of specific health indicators and calls for greater account of the differences between men and women to be taken in clinical trials, dosages for medicines and medical practices (see EUROPE 9179).
