THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/middle east/italy

25/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - After the visit to Israel and Palestine from 9 to 13 April by a delegation of MEPs from several political groups (EPP-ED, PES, ALDE, Grens/EFA), Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL, Italy), on behalf of the group, has written to Unione leaders, who will form the new Italian government under Romano Prodi, to ask for a meeting to discuss the Israel-Palestinian issue, says a press release. Ms Morgantini, who chairs the European Parliament's development committee, stresses that the EU has to apply a policy “based on dialogue and mediation, able to act as quickly as possible”. During their visit, the MEPs, for the first time, met Hamas representatives elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in January: the press release points out that during conversations, these representatives said they were prepared to recognise the 1967 borders and determined to maintain the ceasefire agreement established in Cairo by President Abbas.
