NATO launches Trust Fund for reintegration of former Bosnian soldiers

Brussels, 04/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 3 April, NATO confirmed after a joint NATO-EU meeting in Brussels, that a fund of €13 million would be set up to finance the reintegration into civilian life of around 11,000 Bosnian soldiers currently being demobilised. NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the fund was the largest ever set up by NATO. He was speaking at a press conference also attended by Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy. Javier Solana said that discussions on the cooperation agreement between the EU and Bosnia-Herzegovina are progressing well and that the Union may decide to scale down the peace force, currently composed of 6,700 troops, after the next elections. He also welcomed the decision by European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn to give the Serb authorities one more month (until 30 April) in which to deliver Ratko Mladic up to international justice. Solana expressed pleasure at seeing that it is now possible to continue, as stopping the association process that they had just begun with Serbia Montenegro would have been “very bad news”. The NATO secretary general added that Serbia Montenegro may hope to join a NATO Partnership for Peace programme “ very soon” if Ratko Mladic is given up to justice.
