Brussels, 04/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - How can European citizens who are in a third country when a disaster strikes be successfully evacuated? The EU will be seeking to answer this question by conducting an EU Evacuation Operation Exercise Study (EVAC 06), which will take place in a meeting of the Political and Security Committee (PSC) in Brussels on 5 April, an EU Council press release states. The aim of the exercise is to study the various “aspects related to the planning and conduct of an EU evacuation operation using military means” and the “requirements for the planning, conduct and execution of an evacuation operation”. The exercise, which will last several hours, will be based on a fictitious crisis scenario during which it is necessary to evacuate several thousand EU citizens and other persons from a fictitious country outside the EU where internal violence has reached disproportionate levels, for example during a civil war. EVAC 06 will also involve the EU High Representative Javier Solana, the EU Civil-Military Cell, the EU Joint Situation Centre and the European Commission.
