24/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Euromed Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) holds its second session in Brussels on 27 March. President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell will hand over to the President of the Tunisian Chamber of Deputies. On Monday, EMDA is expected to adopt, after what is expected to be lively debate, texts gathered into one single resolution: an impressive list of amendments has been presented, mainly from Egypt. The majority of the amendments are on the affair of the publication of caricatures of Muhammed in the Danish press. It is already known that the Knesset representatives will probably not be present because of the Israeli general election on 18 March. A Palestinian delegation should be present, but the new parliamentarians (members of Hamas, a banned organisation in the EU) could face visa problems (see EUROPE 9158), not to mention that the Palestinian Legislative Council is fully involved in debates over the new government programme. Representatives from European national parliaments still intend to create (or resuscitate) a Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Forum as part of the Inter-parliamentary Union, a parallel structure which the European Parliament challenges.
