24/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - At his Thursday press conference, the President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell said he had asked heads of state and government to adopt quantifiable objectives based on measures which allowed the effectiveness of application to be monitored (see EUROPE 9158). Speaking of the financial perspective, Mr Borrell said once again that, without changes to the figures and texts, he did not think the political groups could accept the package, which has to be agreed by both branches of the budgetary authority, the Parliament and Council. After pointing out that what made the energy market different was that the opening of the market would bring a reduction in the number of competitors, he said that an energy policy was today “as necessary as the CAP in the 50s”.
