AmCham EU hopes EU will take more measures to combat counterfeiting and piracy

Brussels, 14/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU) calls on European Union Member States to step up the fight against industrial counterfeiting and piracy of products. The EU Council is expected to adopt a resolution clearly stipulating that counterfeiting is a “dangerous criminal activity” that can potentially undermine all industries and ultimately put the safety of the consumer at risk, an AmCham EU press release states. American industry established in the EU warmly welcomes the Commission's Action Plan in this field but trusts that the EU will take more measures, in particular to: - promote the adoption and implementation of the anti-counterfeiting legislation in third countries, especially in the countries that produce pirated products. AmCham EU supports the proposal to station experts on countering piracy in the main regions of production; - improve information sharing systems which should allow swifter action to be taken and counterfeit products to be stopped at the final point of arrival of the goods; - extend control possibilities to transiting goods, without however reopening the TRIPS Agreement (which, AmCham says, some countries advocate); - and improve consumer information, especially on health and safety risks of certain counterfeit goods.
