Brussels, 04/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is underlining its support to restore peace and democracy to Nepal by providing EUR 12 million in assistance to address human rights issues and to contribute to a settlement of the conflict. It announced on Tuesday that EUR 7 million are to be used for a “conflict mitigation” project that will strengthen the National Human Rights Commission and the Supreme Court, and will allow legal aid to be provided to those who need it through the Nepal Bar Association. EUR 5 million have been allocated to an international human rights monitoring mission with over 100 international and local observers throughout the country, managed by the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
