23/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) of the Council of Europe recently carried out a week-long visit to Spain, where it took the opportunity to visit the Spanish enclave of Melilla in the north of Morocco. The towns of Melilla and Ceuta hit the headlines last autumn due to the tragic deaths of many immigrants trying to reach Europe (EUROPE 9038). The delegation, which was led by the President of the CPT, Silvia Casale, a British criminologist, examined interception proceedings and the treatment of foreign nationals by the Civil Guard on the border between Spain and Morocco. A delegation of the European Parliament visited Ceuta and Melilla in early December in order to look into the conditions for the hosting of immigrants and the problems encountered on the borders of the European Union (EUROPE 9089).
