19/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Trade Unions Confederation (ETUC) is launching an appeal for a major demonstration about the proposed directive on services, in Strasbourg on 14 February 2006, the date on which the European Parliament is due to debate the Gebhardt report at its plenary session. ETUC is calling on its affiliated associations to organise activities in their countries, to make sure that the citizens are aware of the possible consequences of this directive, and calls for what it describes as a "stronger social Europe, better European social model and certainly no Bolkestein directive". On Monday, during a debate with Austrian school children (see other article), the President of the GUE/NGL group at the European Parliament, Francis Wurtz, said: one good thing the UK Presidency might do would be to "get rid" of this proposal.
