Polish MEPs are highly critical of British Council Presidency

Brussels, 01/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Concerned by the intentions expressed by the British Presidency with regard to the financial perspectives 2007-2013, three Polish members of the EPP-ED Group at the European Parliament - EP Vice-President Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, Chairman of the Budgets Committee Janusz Lewandowski and Deputy Chairman of the Regional Development Committee Jan Olbrycht - recall in a press release that “there can be no budget deal without the European Parliament”. They support the line adopted by the EP rapporteur on the financial perspectives, Reimer Böge (see EUROPE 9078). The intention (Ed.: attributed to the Presidency, which is due to present its proposal on 5 December) to cut by 10% the financing of the structural funds for the new Member States, is radically against the EP's proposal, they say in a press release. Mr Sauyusz-Polski adds: “Solidarity and regional development are at the heart of European integration, endeavours to abandon this core principle may cause serious damage to the European construction”. The British proposals, he said, would be the “second attempt to reduce the EU's budget, following the substantial lowering of funds in the framework of the Luxembourg compromise” (Ed.: that the new Member States were able to agree to in June this year).
