Brussels, 02/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, has condemned Saturday's 'terrorist bomb attacks in New Delhi markets that have caused the death of at least 50 innocent victims.' The European External Relations Commissioner, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, 'expressed her shock and dismay at the bomb attacks in Delhi… these attacks are cowardly acts, carried about against innocent people at a time and place calculated to inflict maximum injury.' Solana and Benita-Waldner expressed sympathy to the victims and their families (59 people were killed and 152 injured). The bombings, described by Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh as being carried out by terrorists, occurred at crowded markets in Paharagang, Gole and Sarojini Nagar, a few days ahead of the Hindu Diwali festival and the Muslim Eid festival. Responsibility has been claimed by a hitherto unknown group, Inquilab (Revolution), reported to be an offshoot of one of the three main Kashmir separatist guerrilla movements fighting Indian forces, Lashkar-e-Taiba. The attacks took place a little over a fortnight after the United States embassy in the Indian capital, Delhi, was placed on alert against possible terrorist attacks against US interests in New Delhi and several others Indian cities.
