Brussels, 19/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 14 October, the Commission adopted a decision on programmes to monitor and eradicate animal diseases and various types of transmissible spongiform encephalopahies (TSE) and programmes to prevent animal diseases, for which EU funding has been earmarked in 2006. The highest funding goes to TSE surveillance programmes, for which the maximum total funding is EUR 88,305,000 to cover all expenditure on rapid testing and tests to determine the type of virus. EU funding will cover 50% of the costs of animal disease monitoring and eradication programmes with a total of EUR 49,730,000 allocated for 2006. The main diseases covered are bovine brucellosis (14 910 000 euros) and sheep and goat brucellosis (11 760 000 euros). The highest funding is going to Spain, EUR 6.5 mil. Animal disease control and prevention programmes earmark 4 463 000 euros for salmonella (900 000 euros of which for Germany), 50% co-funded. The maximum annual funding available to eradicate BSE is 8 710 000 euros, of which there is 2.8 mil for Ireland, 1 mil for Spain and 985 000 euros for Poland, with EU funding covering 50% of the cost of slaughter. The foot and mouth eradication programmes have been allocated 34 138 000 euros. The biggest share of this goes to Spain (12 790 000 euros), followed by the UK (5 740 000 euros) and Cyprus (5 215 000 euros). EU funding will cover up to 50% of the cost of slaughter and 100% of the cost of testing.
