Commissioner Kovacs acknowledges certain delays in Bulgaria

Brussels, 13/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - László Kovács, the Commissioner in charge of taxation and the customs union, met several representatives of the Bulgarian government in Sofia on 12 and 13 September. Talks focused on Bulgaria's preparations for accession to the European Union in the fields of taxation and the customs union. The Commission has several misgivings about progress being made in work underway in Bulgaria to come into line with European standards, particularly on the following elements: the creation of a National Finance agency, the transfer of domestic excise duty to the national customs agency, the adoption and implementation of key texts on tax legislation, the improvement of tax controls and tax collections, the connection between national and Community information technology systems, and the fight against counterfeiting and corruption.
