09/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU has welcomed the first multi-candidate Presidential elections in Egypt's history on 7 September, describing them in a British Presidency statement as an 'important step towards political reform'. Early indications suggest they were won by current President Hosni Mubarak. 'The EU encourages the government of Egypt to build on what has been achieved in preparing for future elections, including the forthcoming parliamentary ones.'
