WWF states it is urgent to reduce emissions

Brussels, 29/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - The WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) has published a new document entitled Climate Change and Extreme Weather in Europe in which it denounces the role played by the power sector, the main source of CO2 emissions, in the extreme weather conditions that caused this summer's disasters, such as the flooding in the Alps and the fires in Portugal. “To reduce the likelihood of these horrible weather events happening more often, CO2 emissions must be reduced”, Jennifer Morgan of the WWF stresses in a press release, expressing concern that: “The largest European climate polluter, RWE in Germany, continues to plan for new coal power stations, which drive up global warming. European governments can and must stop this”. Her colleague, Oliver Rapf, added: “European politicians need to cut down emissions from the power sector now”.
