29/08/2005 (Agence Europe) In an interview published by the newspaper les Echos of 29 August, the French Minister for Industry, François Loos, discussed issues such as the shoe crisis in France (see EUROPE 9010 on the letter from Italian minister Aldolf Urso to Commissioner Mandelson, calling on him to impose provisional anti-dumping measures on imports of shoes from China, this autumn at the latest. M. Loos said (our translation): "the real question is: do these jobs have a future here? Yes. But as long as industry is able to be reactive. The agreement on the new quotas up to 2007 gives the Europeans the possibility of getting back into the game. This is an opportunity for them to invest in their products, particularly for categories with quotas in place to limit imports. Furthermore, everything depends on creativity. In order to help these sectors, I hope that creating models and collections will be able to enjoy increased tax credit. This point is being discussed with the Commission in Brussels, which seems prepared to raise the ceiling to 200,000 EUR instead of 100,000. But we need to go further than this, and take the view that inventing models is a form of research".
