Brussels, 19/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - Following exhaustion of the pullover and trouser export quotas, the quota for Category 7 shirts from China to the EU was reached on Friday, explained a Commission spokesperson on 19 August. The spokesperson explained that no more import licences would be issued by EU Member States' customs authorities. Other products will soon hit their import quota levels (levels set in June this year), such as bras and T-shirts, which the Financial Times reports as having reached 98.4% and 98.1% of their quota respectively. As at 8 August, imports of Category 5 pullovers and Category 6 trousers had exhausted their quotas, leading to whole deliveries being blocked at the EU's borders. Several Member States, including Sweden, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands (see EUROPE 9008) have reacted by calling for a relaxing of the restrictions set out in the Shanghai Agreement (EUROPE 8967). Commissioner Mandelson is waiting for more detailed information about the scale of the problem (expected before the end of the month, see EUROPE 9007) and has said that any more flexible approach would not come into force until September at the earliest.
