Brussels, 25/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The organisers of the campaign 'Stop Child Labour, school is the best place to work', launched in February 2005, are delighted that Manolis Mavrommatis (EPP-ED, Greece), European Parliament rapporteur on child labour in developing countries, has included many of their recommendations in his report. In a press release, the NGOs and trade unions involved in the Stop Child Labour campaign reject the argument ht child labour is an inevitable consequence of economic poverty, citing evidence from India and other countries that poor children can and do attend formal full-time education when given the opportunity. Both the EP rapporteur and the Stop Child Labour campaigners cal for strategies to get working children into formal education in all education programmes financed by the EU and recommends legal action against EU-based importers using child labour or violating other fundamental labour rights. Both the EP and the Stop Child Labour campaign believe that companies have an important role to play in combatting child labour, and want the Commission to support EU importers willing to accept independent child labour monitoring the products they purchase.
