25/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium (BCCB) welcomed the news on 12 July that Europe's leaders had made a commitment at the Cardiff Informal Competitiveness Council (11/12 July) to tackle the burden of regulation across the EU. The BCCB was also pleased to hear Enterprise and Industry Commissioner Gunter Verheugen's vision of rigorous testing of all new policies and proposals for regulation (see EUROPE 8990). The BCCB explains it 'has been campaigning for over a year on the overall theme of Better Regulation and the tools necessary to achieve improved law making, such as Impact Assessments.' Welcoming the fact that Competitiveness Ministers had approved Commissioner Verheugen's approach on Sunday, and the fact that the Better Regulation pledges are a 'key element in achieving the Lisbon goals', the BCCB warned 'this is just the beginning of a lot of hard work to move intentions into practice.' The BCCB's EU Committee explained 'We have already been involved in a major exercise to provide examples of poor regulation to the UK's Department of Trade and Industry and we are committed to work constructively with them, together with the European Institutions and the following Presidencies, to provide better information and platforms to help politicians and legislators develop an action plan for Better Regulation, which is in the best interests of EU business.'
