Industrial production down 0.3% in eurozone and 0.2% in EU25 in May

Brussels, 20/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to estimates released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell 0.3% in the eurozone in May 2005 compared to April. Output in the EU25 decreased by 0.2% in May 2005. In May 2005 compared to May 2004, industrial production rose by 0.1% in both the eurozone and the EU25. In May 2005 compared to April 2005, production in the energy sector grew by 2.1% in the eurozone and by 1.8% in the EU25. Capital goods decreased by 0.1% in the euro-zone, but increased by 0.2% in the EU25. Non-durable consumer goods fell by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively. Intermediate goods dropped by 0.4% in the eurozone and by 0.6% in the EU25. Durable consumer goods declined by 1.6% and 1.5% respectively. In May 2005, and among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in twelve Member States and fell in ten. The highest increases were registered in Lithuania (+5.5%), Slovenia (+2.4%), Denmark (+2.3%) and Latvia (+1.5%), while the largest decreases were recorded in Portugal (-4.6%), Finland (-3.7%), Luxembourg (-2.6%) and the Czech Republic (-1.3%). In May 2005 compared to May 2004, non-durable consumer goods rose by 1.1% in the eurozone and by 1.0% in the EU25. Capital goods gained 0.6% and 1.0% respectively. Production in the energy sector grew by 0.6% in the eurozone and by 0.2% in the EU25. Intermediate goods fell by 0.5% in both zones. Durable consumer goods declined by 3.5% in the eurozone and by 2.6% in the EU25. The biggest annual increases were registered in Lithuania (+18.5%), Hungary (+10.2%), Estonia (+8.4%) and Latvia (+8.0%), while the largest decreases were recorded in Finland (-9.3%), Portugal (-4.7%) and Ireland (-3.4%).
