THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/serbia and montenegro

20/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative of the EU for CFSP, Javier Solana, who was in Belgrade on Wednesday, has launched an appeal to the authorities of Serbia and Montenegro to speed up their preparatory work for European integration, particularly by stepping up their cooperation with the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. Ensuring full cooperation with the Court is of fundamental importance and the EU hopes that Belgrade will be able to make a "last push" on the arrest and extradition of Radko Mladic, who could be hiding in the country, the High Representative stressed. Mr Solana also said that negotiations between the EU and Serbia and Montenegro on the conclusion of a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) could start next October.
