France fails to persuade EU to end temporary ban on anchovy fishing

Brussels, 18/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Brussels on Monday, EU fisheries ministers briefly discussed the Commission's emergency measures to preserve anchovy stocks in the Bay of Biscay (see Europe 8992 and 2982).

Supported by Germany and Spain, the European Commission refused France's request to end, as from 16 August 2005, the temporary ban on anchovy fishing in the Bay of Biscay, along with the creation of a complete ban on fishing in anchovy spawning grounds. The Commission has stuck...
