07/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has referred the report by British Conservative Timothy Kirkhope back to the Committee on Citizens' Freedoms, Justice and Home Affairs. The report is on Switzerland's association in EU activities in the field of Schengen and Dublin/Eurodac. Consulted in March 2005, the legal affairs committee considered that the Commission should have chosen Article 300 of the EC Treaty as a legal base for these proposals in order to allow application of assent procedure. The Commission agrees to continue consultation. We recall that, once adopted, the agreements will make Switzerland the third country after Iceland and Norway to take part in the Schengen and Dublin/Euradac acquis, introducing Community measures in the field of justice and home affairs. Switzerland will have two years in which to accept and apply any new regulations relating to the Schengen acquis. During a referendum held on 5 June 2005, the Swiss people took a stance in favour of abolishing Swiss border controls.
