Brussels, 28/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In the run up to the World Summit on the Information Society to be held in Tunis from 16 to 18 November, the European Parliament adopted on 23 June in Brussels the own-initiative report by French Socialist Catherine Trautmann, largely approving the Commission's proposals for the second phase of the summit after the first meeting in Geneva end 2003 (EUROPE 8964). MEPs trust that the Tunis Summit will make it possible to move towards a common definition of Internet governance and deal collectively with the subjects of general interest linked to its management (names of domains, address distribution). They recommend strengthened international cooperation in the field of security and spamming and in the fight against cyber crime (especially child pornography). Attempts to restrict pluralism, freedom of expression and respect of human rights will also be discussed. The Parliament hopes responsibilities will be clarified, including public responsibilities, and account taken of the problems involved in intellectual property and cultural diversity. MEPs also hope to ensure neutrality and interoperability of digital platforms and technologies (see EUROPE 8977).
