Brussels, 28/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Taking the view that the operation would not create any significant competition distortion, the Commission has authorised the planned acquisition of the American electronic component distributor Memec by its fellow American company, Avenet. Both of these companies supply electronic components which go into the production of computers, amongst other products. The Commission's investigation focused mainly on the semiconductor market, in which Memec is a specialist, and on national markets, due to the local presence of distributors in the form of sales offices and technicians. Competition from the main distributor within the European Economic Area (EEA), Arrow, and from smaller companies, could prevent the new entity from raising price levels, the Commission observes. Although this operation will shorten the gap between the two leading distributors (Arrow and Avenet), and other distributors within the EEA, the investigation did not point to any risk of collusion in a sector where many different products are sold.
