20/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The MEP Peter Liese has spoken out against recent embryo cloning experiments for medical therapy ends carried out in South Korea (recently reported on in Science by Hwang Woo-suk, a veterinary surgeon from the University of Seoul). The CDU MEP, who chairs the EP's bioethics group, fears that such practices would be more likely to end with the “creation of baby clones than the curing of patients”, and voices concern at the origin of the cells used. According to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he says, secretaries or students or the team of scientists at Seoul had apparently been asked to provide them, states the MEP, who wonders whether this can be described as a “voluntary donation” and fears that “socially vulnerable women in particular” may be forced to make this kind of donation.
