US Congress deems further postponement requested by Europe for biometric passports “unlikely”

Brussels, 01/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - “We are concerned and disappointed”, said a spokesperson for Franco Frattini, the European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, facing the probable refusal of US authorities to extend to 26 August 2006 the deadline for the obligatory presentation of biometric passports. The Commission needs time to assess this response and draw up the “next steps”. The Visa group will discuss the situation in the Member States on 20 April.
