Brussels, 23/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Karl von Wogau, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Security and Defence at the European Parliament, deplores the fact that the EU has insufficient means to face up to a possible terrorist attack that makes use of weapons of mass destruction. During a parliamentary hearing of the personal representative of Javier Solana in this field, Anna Lisa Giannella, the CDU elected member therefore backed the request to increase to at least EUR 15 million the budget foreseen by the Council in the strategy regarding non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction adopted last year. The parliamentary sub-committee plans to draft during the second half of this year an own-initiative report on weapons of mass destruction. In a press release, Mr von Wogau states he was particularly shocked by the report made during the hearing on the subject of the simulation, in Brussels 2004, of a terrorist nuclear attack against the NATO headquarters. The exercise clearly showed that Europe is not prepared to face up to such attacks, Mr von Wogau said, calling for account to also be taken of this in the financial perspectives 2007-2013.
