Brussels, 02/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, High representative for the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy, strongly condemned the attack launched on the blue helmets of MONUC in Ituri (Democratic Republic of Congo) on February 25. In an official statement, he declared: “I condemn, with utmost severity, the attack which cost the lives of nine Bangladeshi blue helmets of MONUC (...). This attack is extremely serious, and must not be unpunished. The people responsible for the attack must be arrested and trialed. It is essential that the authorities of DRC see to this in collaboration with MONUC. Disarming the militia and the armed groups in Ituri is a necessity towards which all parties, including DRC's neighboring countries, must strive”. The High representative discussed the situation in DRC on Tuesday with Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, on the occasion of the London Conference on the support to the Palestinian Authority.
