Ministerial “Mini-session” in Mombassa

Brussels, 02/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Commissioners Peter Mandelson (Trade) and Mariann Fischer Boel (Agriculture) are taking part in a ministerial meeting in Mombassa, Kenya, on Thursday and Friday, organised to try to move negotiations on the Doha Round forward ahead of the WTO ministerial meeting next December in Hong Kong. Some thirty trade ministers from the whole world, including the G90 and the G20, are set to take part in this ministerial “mini-session”. The Kenyan trade minister, Mukhisa Kituyi, told the press that the developing countries want “to agree on concrete things, specific commitments, with definite dates” from the rich countries on the sensitive issues of agriculture and development. In Geneva, the President of the WTO General Council, Amina Mohamed (Kenya), voiced her hopes that the ministers would “be able to give political impetus to the negotiations”. “They are going to discuss (…) agriculture, access to the non-agricultural markets, services, development and trade mediation (…). The aim is to see whether we can make progress on issues which certain members do not feel have been dealt with”, she said, quoted by AFP.
