ACP Council calls on Togolese authorities to return to constitutional legality

Brussels, 24/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Brussels this Wednesday, the ACP Council of Ministers adopted a declaration on Togo which condemns infringements of the 1992 constitution in this ACP country, and calls on the authorities and all Togolese political players to return immediately to constitutional legality. The Council urges the armed forces to refrain from any interference in the political situation in the country and expresses its agreement with ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community. Depending on how the situation progresses, the Council recommends that an ACP mission be sent to Togo to maintain dialogue, and calls on the President of the ACP Council to invite the EU to call for consultations with Togo under article 96 of the Cotonou agreement as soon as possible. The Council expresses its concern at the risk that the current situation could compromise efforts made, by the ACP group amongst others, and which have led to the gradual resumption of cooperation between Togo and the EU.
