Brussels, 22/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday the EU/Moldova Cooperation Council adopted the action plan for Moldova as part of the Union's “neighbourhood policy”. Luxembourg foreign affairs minister, Jean Asselborn, who chaired the meeting, underlined the importance of the action plan, which aims to, “strengthen reciprocal relations and support political and economic reforms in Moldova”. The Cooperation Council recalled the need for the parliamentary elections on 6 March to be open and fair and for the campaign to be inclusive and impartial in respect of the neutrality of the government and state towards all candidates and their supporters. Mr Asselborn pointed out that the “the level of ambition of relations between the EU and Moldova will be based on Moldova's commitment to common values”. The Luxembourg presidency also indicated that the European Union would “support the mediation efforts by the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OSCE) to resolve the Transnistrian conflict”. The Cooperation Council welcomed Moldova's ratification of the Protocol extending the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement to new Member States of the EU, as well as the preliminary acceptance in the agreement for opening a European Commission delegation in Chisinau.
