Brussels, 22/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, adopting the report by Margie Sudre (PPE-DE, France) on fishing the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus spp), the European Parliament approved a proposal aimed at transposing into Community law the new international measures to combat illegal fishing of this species. The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in 1999 adopted a “catch documentation scheme” for fishing Patagonian toothfish and recently recommended that it be improved to avoid fraud. The draft regulation, which transposes the latest CCAMLR recommendations, allows notably for the specification of the state authorities of the port authorised to control catches of toothfish. The aim is to make it impossible to import or export toothfish without the correct documentation.
