Brussels, 18/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Green Party overwhelmingly said “yes” to the EU Constitution text during its extraordinary meeting in Brussels on 17 February, with 51 votes in favour and 7 against. The parties of the European Green Party that voted against were: Ecologists Greens (Greece), Miljöpartiet de Gröna (Sweden), De Gronne (Denmark), and Miljöpartiet De Gronne (Norway, which is not a member of the European Union). The spokespersons for the Party, Grazia Francescato and Pekka Haavisto, considered that, despite these shortcomings, the Constitution is going in the right direction. The Party adopted a resolution in which it calls for a vote in favour of the Treaty, while welcoming the European Parliament's resolution which, as the Greens/EFA Group requested, announces that it will use its right of own initiative to propose improvements to the Constitution as soon as it is ratified (see EUROPE of 3 January, p.4, and 8 January, p.3). The European Greens point out in their resolution that they will promote a European citizens' initiative (foreseen by the European Constitution) to present an amendment to the Constitution focusing on extending European democracy, creating an area of society security, justice and solidarity and giving the EU the instruments to play a role of peace in the international scene.
