Brussels, 17/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Next Wednesday in Strasbourg, the Socialist group at the European Parliament will present a draft resolution that is extremely critical of the Barroso Commission's legislative programme. The proposal presented by the president and vice presidents of the group, Martin Schultz and Hannes Swoboda believe that this programme lacks ambition and regretted that the proposals are “too general”. They denounced “the work programme for failing to meet economic, social and environmental challenges” and expressed worries about the excessive neo-liberal character of many proposals. The group was particularly critical of the detailed proposals on social policy (although it welcomed the new social agenda presented by Commissioner Spidla), sexual equality, consumer protection, reduction in development disparities between regions and media monopolies in Europe. As for the services directive (the Bolkestein directive which some people have nicknamed “Frankenstein” Editor's note), the resolution notes the desire of the Commission the revise it and is calling on it to do so in a way that avoids social dumping between Member States.
