Brussels, 17/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - ON Thursday the Council of Ministers of the EU adopted without debate, a regulation for extending the ban on trawling in polish waters. Since 1991, the International Baltic Sea Fishery Commission (IBSFC) imposed a ban on trawling in the Oderbank in order to protect turbot and other young flat fish stock reproduction. The trawling ban was implemented in Community waters in fifteen Member States by a regulation of 1997. Since the accession of Poland to the European Union, the regulation also applies to Polish waters. The proposals also aim to extend the ban zone to Oderbank plateau in Polish waters. At the end of September 2004, the European Commission adopted this proposal (EUROPE 6 October 2004). On 20 January 2005, the competent Council work group (internal and external fisheries policy) unanimously agreed on the text contents.
