Brussels, 04/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - The “Campaign for Parliament Reform (CPR)- Making Europe's Parliament accountable” welcomes in a press release the determination shown by the President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, to reach an agreement on the statute of MEP during the term of Luxembourg Presidency (for Mr Juncker's declarations in plenary in Strasbourg, see EUROPE of 13 January, p.11). Noting that Juncker intends to suggest introducing a single remuneration for MEPs based on the current salary of German MEPs, the CPR stresses: the transparency of MEP expenses is part and parcel of the Member's statute and it is not possible to have a European salary which is uniform and transparent without also ensuring that expenses are actual and fully accountable, especially travelling expenses. The systems of reimbursement of expenses were originally designed to compensate for differences in MEP salaries from the various Member States (Ed.: differences that were sometimes considerable), the CPR recalls, giving its full support to Jean-Claude Juncker. (On the subject of the Campaign, launched by around one hundred MEPs from fourteen Member Sates - mainly Dutch, Finnish, Swedish and British - see EUROPE of 20 January, p.15).
