Brussels, 02/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Dutch socialist Jan Marinus Wiersma, following the inauguration of the European Parliament Forum on the Roma called on the EU to adopt “targeted programmes” for the Roma. The forum during the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp where many Rom lost their lives, was opened by Hungarian socialist Katalina Levai, who pointed out that, “After 2007, when Romania and Bulgaria are due to become members, there will be over 10 million Roma in the EU”. She said that this would mean, “moving beyond declarations and to create a coordinated framework for actions aimed at improving the situation of the Roma”, with clear target, regular monitoring of achievements and adequate funding. The MEP was angry that, “funding for over six million Roma in five Member States is far less than the funding for a single project for young people in on Member State”.
