PES parliamentarians note progress

Brussels, 02/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Four parliamentarians from the Socialist group (which is currently visiting Turkey with the women's rights committee) will be drafting a report on women's rights in Turkey. In a press release they welcomed progress mad over recent years (see EUROPE yesterday p 8 on delegation). Emine Bozkurt¸rapporteur from the Netherlands, Lissy Gröner Germany, Katerina Batzeli, Greece Teresa Riera Madurell, Spain, following a meeting with Güldal Aksti, minister for women's rights welcomed the setting up of the Great Turkish Assembly and a women's rights committee. Parliamentarians say that this is expected to contribute to the recent legislative reforms on women being implemented in full. They also say that they are pleased with prime minister Erdogan's commitment to setting up a special budget on gender issues. Mr Erdogan is also committed to fighting problems such as violence against women and education, noted Ms Bozkurt. Ms Gröner highlighted the need to tackle the problem of Turkish women's participation in politics: (currently, 96% of parliamentarians are men and 4% of women).
