THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) osce/poland

28/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Miklos Haraszti, has written to the Polish minister of justice, Andrzej Kalwas, to express his concern about recent legal provisions in Poland concerning the media. Haraszti cites the case of a Warsaw prosecutor requesting a 10-month suspended prison sentence and EUR 5000 fines for a journalist, Jerzy Urban, accursed of insulting a foreign head of state in an 'offensive' editorial. The OSCE Representative urged the Polish authorities to ensure application of a moratorium on the use of the restrictive laws and introduce laws to decriminalise libel and defamation.
