GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/postage stamps

20/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a letter to French Le Monde newspaper on 18 January, former Director General for Information at the European Commission, Jacques-René Rabier, makes a suggestion concerning the non-harmonisation of the cost of sending a letter in the EU, whereby Member States (or the ones that want to lead the way in this area at least) decide to launch a common stamp for standard-price letters in the EU. The stamp illustration would be the same throughout the EU and could illustrate the myth of the carrying off of Europe with the illustration chosen by public competition, with a small symbol for the country where the stamp was issued. Rabier said he didn't see why it would be more difficult to mint a common postage stamp than having a single currency in twelve nations that have been competing for centuries in the face of competitive devaluation.
