Brussels, 14/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU has welcomed the signing on 30 December 2004 of a peace accord between the government of Senegal and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), officially ending twenty-two years of violence. On Wednesday, the Presidency of the Council of the EU published the following statement.
'The European Union and its Member States welcome the signing on 30 December 2004 of a peace accord between the government of Senegal and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC). This accord reflects the determination of the parties concerned to find a final political solution to the Casamance crisis. With the conviction that this is an important stage in the process of reconciliation, the European Union and its Member States would encourage the various players to apply rapidly all the measures adopted on 30 December 2004. The EU reiterates its determination to contribute to the reconstruction of the region.'
