EU condemns suicide attack in Gaza

Brussels, 14/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the EU25, the Luxembourg EU Presidency has unreservedly condemned the suicide attack carried out on Thursday evening at the Karni crossing into the Gaza Strip. Three armed Palestinian groups claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed six and wounded several others. "The European Union … conveys its sincere condolences to the Israeli government and the families of the victims. The attack intervened at a time when there is real hope for relaunching the political process", the Presidency declaration reads. "The Presidency calls upon the parties to ensure that such acts do not sabotage the efforts for a negotiated, just and lasting peace, and to show restraint. The Presidency urges the Palestinian authorities to do all they can to prevent such acts in the future. It is imperative to put an end to attacks and violence. The European Union will continue to support all those who aspire to peace and security", the Presidency states, saying it will "work with determination" within the parties concerned in the region and within the Quartet.
