Teheran warns IAEA off from military espionage

Brussels, 13/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - Teheran has warned inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against any acts of military espionage, ahead of their visit on Thursday to the military site at Parchine. "We have authorised the inspection of our military sites, but we will not allow any act of espionage or theft of information from our military sites", said Hossein Moussavian, the Iranian spokesperson to the IAEA in Vienna, on Thursday, adding that inspectors were "only allowed to use their equipment to take anything from outside buildings".

Hassan Rohani, who is in charge of the nuclear dossier within the Iranian government, said during the diplomatic visit of a Japanese delegation to Teheran that Iran would soon resume the uranium enrichment activities it agreed to freeze last November, by request of the Council of Governors of the IAEA and in return for a cooperation agreement with the EU troika made up of Germany, France and the United Kingdom. "Suspending enrichment, by which we hope to gain the trust of the international community and reach an overall understanding with Europe in the fields of politics, economics, security in the Middle East and nuclear issues, is for a limited period", stressed Mr Rohani. "Iran will not allow other countries to stop its enrichment programme, and will soon resume its activities under the watchful eye of the IAEA and in the framework of its international commitments", he continued.
