Brussels, 11/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - The meeting of central bank representatives from the main world economies (G10) in Basle ended on an upbeat note on Monday. Bankers welcomed the declarations from US treasury John Snow, who last week reaffirmed his aim to reduce the US budget deficit, which is considered as a major reason for the dollar's persistent weakness. Jean-Claude Trichet informed the press that, "Secretary Snow has said something very important and which is very much appreciated". This "important contribution" has to be translated into a strong dollar policy so that the growth scenario planned by central bank governors for the world economy reaches 4% in 2005, added the president of the European Central Bank (ECB). At the end of the meeting he stress that, "we get the feeling that oil prices and the impact of oil has to a large extend been absorbed…oil price hikes are now to a large extent behind us". I he outlined that in 2005 the world had to experience "a substantial commercial expansion".
